A file with Portable Document Format file extension is called PDF file. Mostly PDF is marked and it’s visible in the icon itself if it is a PDF file. PDF file is a ‘read only’ file.

This read only characteristic made PDF file popular. Because like in word or in text format it is not easy to copy or edit the PDF file. So mostly the data will be secure throughout and chances for making manipulation in the original documents are less compared to the other formats. Computer aided design(CAD) drawings, air tickets, certificates, gate passes, memo, legal notifications etc can be converted to PDF format made things easy and fool proof.
Although it is a ‘read only’ file it is now possible to edit these files with help of software programs.
If PDF reader program like Adobe Reader is installed in your system, the PDF icon will be like this.
If the Icon is like this it’s sure that the file is a PDF file.
